Tiger Valley Dynamic Entry Course (updated with Video 2 now)

Background

Dynamic Entry Course

This course is broken up into a classroom and practical class.  The first night ended up going a little over and ran from 6:30 to 10:00 PM at night.  I would recommend anyone who is interested in taking one of these night courses to plan for an extra hour outside of the scheduled time since they frequently run over.  This is a good thing and I would be willing to stick around past midnight if the lessons ran that long.  Most times they run from 30 minutes to 60 minutes over.  

The first day was a primary class room studies.  Kevin Ross from Tiger Valley was the instructor for this class.  He is a very dynamic speaker and his side stories provide a great amount of humor from his very colorful career.  He works as part of Garland’s SWAT team here in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.  The first day of class covered various basics of Dynamic Entry.  The first day was a no shoot day and utilized Blue Guns provided on loan from Civilian Tactical Weapons (Please contact us for pricing on Blue Gun Training guns if you are interested).  We did a lot of dry runs with the Blue Guns practicing the dynamic movement into the class room environment we were in.  This included utilizing the standard Point-Cover-Point-Cover system breaking us down into two man and four man teams. 

We covered the numbering system for room clearing (which is illustrated here in the article for reference), along with communication, movement, dynamic reaction, OODA Loop (Observe Orient Decide Action) and many other items. 

The class had about 18 students, mostly from various different Law Enforcement Departments in the area.  For those of you who have prior Law Enforcement backgrounds, this type of training is not typically taught in the Police Academy and normally reserved for just Specialized Law Enforcement Teams in an Agency.  However, getting this type of training I feel is critical regardless, because you may never know when you may get called upon to have to assist in an operation at moments notice or have to fill in.  At the end of the day, you may not be as trained as a specialized team that practices over and over for this type of event, but at least having a basic understanding of the tactics, terms and the dynamics can help make your participation more of a benefit than a liability.

What Good is this to me?

For those of you not part of a Law Enforcement Agency and are not called upon to do these types of things, having the fundamental knowledge of how to do this is critical even for understanding on how to clear your own house.  You may be operating on more of a Covert versus Dynamic Entry, but a lot of the same rules will apply.  At the end of the day, all of these types of training classes help get you out of your comfort zone with your handgun and make you more effective with it rather than someone who just shoots at a paper target once a year.  If there are any creative shooting type courses offered in your area, please consider taking one of them.  It amazes me to see how uncomfortable people get with the shooting when you take them out of their normal shooting activity.  You can have someone who cuts the center of paper target at the range, not being able to hit a human size target under some more dynamic shooting styles.
