CRITICAL MEDICAL SUPPLIES FOR GUN OWNERS

INTRODUCTION

How prepared are you for dealing with a gunshot wound in your home?  Will you be able to attend to the wound of a loved one and stabilize them while waiting for an ambulance?  Understanding that most of my viewers have not attended a First Responder Training Class (although I encourage everyone to, regardless of your interest in firearms), I wants to talk about the importance of having the proper medical supplies and options.

GENERAL SUPPLIES

Most households do not contain the necessary supplies to deal with a gunshot wound.  Using 10 Band-Aids to cover up a gushing gun shot wound is not going to exactly help.  You need to ensure you have a compress and sufficient gauze pads.  You are treating a gunshot wound not any different than any major bleeding.  The only issue here is that unlike a knife cut, this will be a very deep wound that can cause serious amounts of bleeding, especially based on the type of bullet.  Knowing where to find the clean towels are important. 

SPECIAL SUPPLY -BLOOD CLOTTING AGENT

 This comes to our component that most houses do not have.  For $30 at most medical supply stores or online, you can find a product like Celox.  Keep in mind, I have never shot myself (sorry to all my fans, a few ex-'s in my life and a few haters on the internet for this) to actually prove the claims of the manufacturer.  However, this is not a new technology or something that has not been done before.  If you don't want to go with Celox, try one of any other Blood Clotting Agents.  The important things is to make sure you have such a supply stocked in your house.

Also, for just general disaster supplies, this is a good item to keep in the house in case you have a serious lasceration you have to deal with.  Keep in mind, I am NOT a medical professional.  However, I believe it is critical that you understand the best ways to handle dealing with such an issue as a gunshot wound if it should happen.

This comes to another discussion.  Someone breaks into your home, you shoot him and he falls.  He is not dead but is bleeding severely.  Are you going to provide medical attention to this person?  Personally, because of my background in Law Enforcement, I would tend to the intruder's wounds.  If you would is up to you and the local laws in your area.  Now if I had kids and came home to catch the guy actively raping my daughter, I don't know if I would make the same statement.  At the end of the day, these are things you should think about and make decisions on prior to finding yourself in an uncomfortable situation where you have to make decisions under high stress.

Another issue comes into your personal defense and that is training.  Personally, because I have done a lot of shooting drills which have almost become instinctive after Law Enforcement of two in the chest and one in the head, that may play into to the viability of any of these options ever coming into play if I shot an intruder, since most likely he would be shot dead because of the way I practice shooting.

However, if someone in your household is the one who takes the shot, you may just injure the intruder.  Either way it should be a discussion that you have with your spouse, hopefully an after diner conversation and not during a meal.  

Getting back to the subject at hand, the manufacturer's website for Celox is http://www.sammedical.com and this along with more expensive options are available on the site.  If you look at the basics in First Aid, they break down as follows:

A Airway (obstructions to the Airway)

B Breathing (verify breathing (chest movement, air out of nose or mouth, etc))

C Circulation (Bleeding)

The last one here, bleeding, is the one we want to make sure we address.  Also, take into effect where the gunshot wound is before you start lifting legs, etc.  Remember, you are trying to reduce bleeding.  If the gunshot wound is in the leg or foot, it is a good idea to lift the leg.  If this is not the case, you don't want to lift the leg and cause more blood to flow down to the wounded area.

 

CONCLUSION
